Karen Kaur joined the firm in 1991 as an associate and during the period up to 1998 she practiced first in the banking litigation department of the firm and later moved to its corporate department. In 1999 she relocated to Hong Kong and for more than 10 years practiced at the legal firm of Deacons where she became a partner. She returned to Malaysia and re-joined Shook Lin & Bok in October 2015. Karen is a graduate of the University of Malaya holding a first class LL.B. (Hons) degree. She obtained a Masters in Law from Harvard Law School in 1996.
Her experience is primarily in the area of corporate and commercial law focusing on investment funds and asset management. While in Hong Kong, Karen worked with a wide range of international and local fund houses and has considerable experience in the establishment of private and retail investment products, including hedge funds, UCITs, private equity funds, equity and bond funds, authorisation for public sale of unit trusts and offshore mutual funds.
Her clients include fund managers, trustees, independent asset managers, distributors, sponsors, investors and advisers. She advises them on all regulatory aspects of investment business, including licensing requirements, compliance issues and review of ISDAs, side letters, distribution agreements and prime brokerage agreements.
Karen is able to provide advice on matters pertaining to Malaysian securities laws, particularly in the funds and investment advisory areas. This would include the establishment and authorisation of various types of Malaysia collective investment schemes and funds and advising investment managers and other participants in the industry on all aspects of law and regulation governing them.
