WIPO Information Notice No. 28/2022 – Entry into Force of the 12th Edition of the International Classification of Goods and Services (“Nice Classification”)

The World Intellectual Property Organization (“WIPO”) has issued a notice dated 14 October 2022 informing that the 12th Edition of the Nice Classification will enter into force on 1 January 2023.
A number of changes have been made to the goods and services classified under the 12th Edition of the Nice Classification which will be applied by the International Bureau of WIPO to:-
a) any application for international registration that is received by the Office of origin on or after 1 January 2023;
b) any application for international registration that is received by the International Bureau of WIPO on or after 1 January 2023, when the said application is received by the International Bureau of WIPO after the two-month time limit referred to in Article 3(4) of the Protocol Relating to the Madrid Agreement Concerning the International Registration of Marks.
As has been the standing practice, the International Bureau of WIPO will not be reclassifying goods / services in international registrations with a filing date earlier than 1 January 2023.
