Introduction of New Registration Number Format for Business Entities
The Companies Commission of Malaysia (“Commission”) has announced the introduction of a new 12-digit format for registration numbers for companies, businesses and limited liability partnerships. The implementation of the new format, which took effect on 11 October 2019, is in line with the government’s initiative to adopt a single registration format for all business entities in Malaysia pursuant to the Small and Medium Enterprises Master Plan 2012 to 2020.
New Format of Registration Number
The new 12-digit registration number comprises the following:-
- the first 4 digits that show the year a business entity was registered;
- the next 2 digits which show the type of business entity; and
- the last 6 digits which are the running number of a business entity.
Impact on Old Registration Number
The old registration number is still maintained and can be used until further notice by the Commission. As such, for the time being, the old registration number may be displayed along with the new registration number (e.g. Name: ABC Sdn. Bhd. Registration No: 201901234567 (1234567-A)) during submission or lodgement of statutory documents or registration. Nevertheless, business entities are encouraged to use the new registration number format as it is expected to be applied fully once a formal notice is issued by the Commission.
