International Malaysia Law Conference (IMLC) 2016
A flagship event of the Malaysian Bar — the International Malaysia Law Conference (IMLC) 2016 was held from the 21st—23rd September 2016 at The Royale Chulan Kuala Lumpur. The President of the Malaysian Bar and a Partner of the firm, Mr Steven Thiru gave the welcome note for the IMLC 2016 with its theme “Challenges of an ASEAN Community: Rule of Law, Business, and Being People-Oriented”. Plenary Session 5
Mr Ivan Ho along with Mr Ong Hock An, Partner and Head of Insolvency Practice in BDO spoke on the topic of “Companies Act 2016”, highlighting the key areas of changes introduced under the recently passed Companies Bill 2015. Special focus was placed on Corporate Voluntary Arrangement and Judicial Management with a comparative analysis of these remedies which are available in the United Kingdom and Singapore respectively. The session was moderated by Mr Abdul Fareed Abdul Gafoor, Treasurer for the Malaysian Bar.
Breakout Session 4
Mr Jal Othman spoke in the Breakout Session on Business Law which explored the topic of “ASEAN Integration: Creating Islamic Finance Opportunities” and discussed at length, the question of whether the legal community is prepared for Syariah-compliant financial services of the future.
